Presenter: Dr. Stephen E. O’Grady, DVM, MRCVS

Dr. Stephen O’Grady, DVM, MRCVS, is a distinguished figure in equine podiatry, blending his expertise as both a veterinarian and a farrier. With over 30 peer-reviewed publications, numerous book chapters, and extensive international lecturing experience, he has significantly contributed to the field, particularly in therapeutic farriery and the management of complex hoof disorders.

Dr. O’Grady received his veterinary degree from the University of Pretoria in South Africa. Early in his career, he worked as a professional farrier, and this dual foundation in both veterinary medicine and farriery has deeply informed his clinical approach.

Over the past three decades, Dr. O’Grady has published more than 30 peer-reviewed scientific papers, authored multiple book chapters, and has presented extensively at international veterinary and farriery conferences. He is particularly known for his clinical work and research on laminitis, hoof capsule distortions, white line disease, quarter cracks, and the mechanical principles of therapeutic shoeing. His work emphasises evidence-based, practical applications that are both medically sound and mechanically effective.

He is the founder of Northern Virginia Equine, where he continues to provide consultative podiatry services, and is a frequent collaborator with both veterinary practices and elite farriers around the world. Dr. O’Grady also serves as an editorial reviewer for several leading veterinary journals and is a past recipient of the AAEP President’s Award in recognition of his contributions to equine veterinary education.

Dr. O’Grady remains a passionate advocate for the integration of veterinary and farriery disciplines, and his educational efforts aim to elevate hoof care through a shared understanding of anatomy, pathology, and biomechanics.
